According to a recent Gizmodo report, while Skype 2.0, with 3G, is coming the way of the iPhone users, the new Skype app is only free for a limited period – with the service to entail “a small monthly fee” from August.
The Gizmodo report also said that the new Skype 2.0 version will include improvements like faster start-up time; near CD-quality sound; a better call-quality indicator; and quicker access to the dial pad through the home screen of the iPhone.
Noting that the use of Skype on 3G has been the “number one” request by iPhone users, Russ Shaw, general manager for Skype Mobile, said: “Using Skype on iPhone without being restricted to the availability of a Wi-Fi network will open up new ways for Skype customers to stay connected and make free or low-cost calls whenever they want, wherever they are in the world.”
Meanwhile, a separate report by PC World says that Skype is yet to work out a way for charging iPhone customers for the 3G calls; and that the monthly fee proposition will likely take shape only “after the end of
2010.”
The PC World report further adds that Skype’s new 3G service will be available on the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS.
Though the users of the 3G-lacking second- and third-generation iPod Touch can also use the service over Wi-Fi; they will however require a compatible headset with microphone.
