Labour Tourism Spokesperson, Kelvin Davis has reported that arrests have been made in Northland and Queenstown concerning attacks on tourists ;however, says more revolt could emerge if the Government fails to resource the tourism industry in a view to educate Kiwi communities and tourists about shared values.
"The Government needs to resource the industry to educate both tourists and our communities in the industry's core values of kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga," quotes Kelvin Davis.
"Kaitiakitanga” means caring for the environment and "Manaakitanga” means hospitality.
Kelvin Davis posts that tensions which are witnessed hovering in at least one Far North community, following the incidents that involved severe tourist abuse by locals, and the rubbish and effluent from freedom campers being dumped on roadsides.
He further feels that with 65,000 visitors hopeful of coming for the next year's Rugby World Cup, the country just cannot afford to have tourists return home, by labeling New Zealanders as a bunch of abusive people.
It is reported that the Government extended a $30m budget, in order to promote New Zealand in international markets. In addition, he continuously laid emphasis on the need to be an appropriation for educating tourists and Kiwis on each other's expectations.
