According to a new report by the Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, citing discussions with industry observers and supply chain stores, Apple’s decision to branch out to a non-AT&T iPhone will likely result in the launch of a T-Mobile iPhone, rather than the much-speculated and highly-rumored Verizon device.
Noting that while the popular Apple iPhone will probably become available on multiple US carriers by next year, Wu further added that it will be T-Mobile that will first get the iPhone after Apple’s ends its exclusivity deal with AT&T. Wu also opines that T-Mobile is more likely to agree to Apple’s terms to get the iPhone.
In fact, in a statement, hinting that a T-Mobile iPhone is clearly on the cards, Wu further said that a non-AT&T iPhone is “becoming closer to reality than ever and could happen as early as this fall” or by 2011 first-half.
The reason why Wu is pegging the possibility of a T-Mobile iPhone before a Verizon one is that while both AT&T and T-Mobile’s 3G services are both on UMTS/HSPA setup of mobile networks, Verizon is on the CDMA network.
Elaborating further, Wu said: “Interestingly, both the new iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS support 3G at the 2100 MHz frequency and, from our understanding, the technical hurdle to support T-Mobile is minor compared to supporting CDMA technology at VZ and Sprint.”
