According to a recent report by the Nieman Journalism Lab’s Megan Garber, some new features are being tested on the Google News page – giving it a facelift in terms of the manner in which stories are presented on the page, along with the addition of a human element. Thus far, the Google News page has been featuring only those stories that are selected by algorithms.
Garber hinted that content selected by human beings might feature on the Google News page after noticing a small box titled “Editor’s Picks” – a section in which editors from some publications can present five stories that they wish to highlight. The stories comprising the “Editor’s Picks” section will change with each visit to the page.
As per The New York Times, Google’s initial partners in the attempt include publications like Reuters, US Magazine, and The Atlantic.
Yet another noticeable change that the Google News page is undergoing is the one pointed by Search Engine Land, which has revealed that Google is trying out a blog-like design that will list news stories by category in one single column, instead of the two side-by-side columns that are being currently used on the page.
Google will display a “Spotlight” on some specific stories in the column, wherein users can also set preferences about the stories they want to the see the most!
