A battle has started between Pew Environment Group and American Petroleum Institute over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Both the groups are engaged is a public battle over the oil spill.
The Pew Environment Group is stressing that unless rules are not changed, an incident like the one which occurred recently can happen again. It is calling that strong legislation will ensure that the incident will not be repeated in the future.
On the other hand, The American Petroleum Institute feels that the oil industry is a vital industry and an important part of the US economy. It also claims that the entire industry is working with BP to respond to the recent oil spill.
There is increasing pressure on the US Government and the US Congress to change the policy due to recent oil spill. Environment groups are also putting pressure to develop stronger policies which will ensure that a similar incident will not be repeated in the future.
American people are also against offshore drilling and the Government will have to keep public opinion in mind, while making any policy changes. Incidents like this have also taken place in the past. This is still the biggest incidence of oil spill in the US history.
The oil industry is also accused of being more concerned with profits than with protecting the environment. During a recent Congressional hearing, the safety record of most of the oil Companies was severely criticized by the US Senators.
