In the year 2004, cities across New Zealand were ordered to improve the quality of air in their areas. They were told that they will face serious consequences in case they failed to obey these regulations.
These measures have helped in significantly improving the quality of air in Christchurch. Environment experts are also very happy with these measures and feel that these steps have significantly improved the quality of air.
The role played by Environment Canterbury (ECan) is also being applauded by everyone including environment lovers. It is stressed that the steps taken by ECan have benefitted everyone and made Canterbury a better place to stay.
It has helped to make the whole area much more environment friendly, than before. Before these regulations were imposed, the air in Canterbury was polluted by 36 times more than the safe levels. By the end of last year, air quality had improved significantly in the city.
But now, the Government feels that these standards need to be relaxed to protect businesses and jobs in the region. This has lead to the Government being attacked by environmental groups who accuse the Government of not caring for the health of the people and environment.
They claim that 1100 people die every year in New Zealand due to pollution. It also has a bad affect on the health of thousands of children.
