Thousands of women had gathered outside Parliament House in Canberra to demand for more home-birthing rights like funding and insurance.
These Australians braved a rainy day to support women's rights to give birth at home. The protesters showed pleasure due to the reprieve granted to midwives allowing them to practice legally until 2012.
The state and territory health minister also agreed to give the midwives a two-year exemption from holding indemnity insurance but the protesters said it was not enough.
They want medicare to fund the home-births and midwives to have an ongoing indemnity protection for helping mothers give birth at home.
The Federal Health Minister, Nicola Raxon, said the Government will not be covering insurance for home-births.
Ms Raxon also added that a maternity services review process was conducted but it didn't recommend public funding for home-birthing and the government sticking by that advice.
Liberal, Greens and Family First senators spoke at today's protest rally in support of home-birth receiving extra rights.
