AgResearch scientists have said that they will go abroad for their genetically engineered white clover. The scientists are developing, white clover to decrease the Methane emissions from livestock by 10%.
AgResearch is a science Company, which is owned by the State. The Company has been facing regulatory problems over a broad range of applications for GE livestock. The GE livestock is demanded for producing high-value proteins in milk.
Researchers in New Zealand have performed ryegrass genetically engineered offshore; this grass was developed to improve the drought resistance.
"The technology has significant value for New Zealand, but in the current regulatory environment, some of the work will continue with partners offshore”, said AgResearch.
However, the particular place for white clover research is not finalized, yet. The Company plans to go ahead with their work abroad, then after a significant development, it will get that back to country.
Auckland University also, bred the sheep in Adelaide for their GE sheep model. That time also the scientists could not get into the procedures of regulatory approvals.
The Soil& Health Association of New Zealand has said that to carry out such an experiment, it means that AgResearch is ignoring the meaning of green, clean and 100% pure. It said that even the consumers prefer clean and green, so GE is not really needed.
