The Accident Compensation Corporation has said that farming accidents kill a farmer every 28 days in New Zealand and a farmer or farm worker is wounded every half hour.
Last year,13 farmers died because of accidents, and 18,000 injuries were caused by farm accidents. According to ACC the most common reason of these injuries was the improper handling of animals and machinery. Cattle injured about 1700 farm workers last year.
According to Otago University, it is estimated that 12,645 times farm workers lose their control on quad bikes, which result in about 1400 injuries, however, all of these injuries are not considered to be work place injuries by ACC.
Nearly 300 people are wounded in the country because of tractor run over and rolling. Tractor accidents are also caused by uncovered power take-off shaft.
Keith McLea, General Manager, ACC has said that cattle, quad bike and tractor accidents cost $ 12.4 million in a year.
The Accident Compensation Corporation has formed three safety booklets, these booklets provide tips of handling cattle like, to keep them calm and to make the voice pitch higher, so that the cattle know where their owner is. These booklets also give guidelines of controlling the quad bikes like wearing helmet and keeping an eye on the roads.
