The policy of the Queenstown Lakes District Council to deal with flooding problems was severely criticized by the citizens of the city. The businessmen also felt that the current policy is not correct and needs to be changed.
It was pointed out that the city council needs to take more steps to prevent the flooding in the town of Queenstown. It was felt that the city council does not take enough steps to control the flood and it needed to take more initiatives.
Mayor Clive Geddes acknowledged that the council is ready to interact with all the concerned parties to overcome these problems. He defended the various steps taken by the City Council to deal with flood in the city.
It was argued that Government orders lead to the flooding of the town, which would not have taken place if proper steps would have been taken to deal with the situation.
The Mayor observed that he is trying to overcome these issues by interacting with senior Government functionaries.
However, the Mayor also highlighted that he had maintained that the town was open for business even after flooding had occurred in certain parts of the town.
The businessmen also urged the Mayor to encourage insurance Companies to provide flood coverage to the businesses. It was also felt that the information management and the overall response to the situation needed to improve.
