Kiwifruit marketer, Zespri has announced the commercialization of its three new varieties of kiwifruit. Zespri will also start orchards trials for two more varieties. This winter, two hundred hectares of each variety would be licensed to be planted.
Zespri has announced that the new varieties offered are the outcome of a 10 year long development program. The varieties are gold variety and sweet green fruit.
Jeff Weseley, Chairman of Turners & Growers said that Zespri was trying to come with a new and better variety of fruit.
"Zespri's announcement is just the first step and its varieties will have to compete with many others for the attention of global consumers who are demanding breakthrough products, not just technical tweaks to what they already buy", he said.
He also said that his Company appreciates the innovation made by Zespri.
Weseley also stated that old regulations related with kiwifruit exports should be renewed now, and owners of premium kiwifruit varieties should be permitted to export it.
Turners& Growers are the main competitors of Zespri. Further, T&G also holds monopoly over the exports of kiwifruit. It has its own variety of kiwifruit, however, it can't's export them, as due to the regulations, the same have to go through a process to work with Zespri.
