Farm Deaths in New Zealand are Rising

Farm Deaths in New Zealand are RisingAccording to the Accident Compensation Corporation, one farmer is killed in 28 days in New Zealand. In the year 2009, 13 farmers died and there were 18,600 injuries because of farm accidents.

According to this data, Waikato and Canterbury are the leading regions in the farm accidents, and Wanganui-Manawatu region is in the third slot. This proves that these regions are the most unsafe for farming. Millions of dollars in the country are being spent on these farm-related accidents.

There were 300 injuries caused by quad bikes.

About 1523 were the new claims, which were made to the ACC. ACC already had 1814 claims of the previous years, which were registered with it. These accidents took the cost spent on these accidents to $5,970,085.

Nationally, 18,600 new claims were added to the previous list of 41,441 claims with ACC. For these accidents Accident Compensation Corporation had to pay $71 million.

The President of Wanganui Federated Farmers, Brian Doughty has said that the farmers should find the solutions to avert the increasing problem of farm deaths. He said that better education and licensing procedures can prove to be helpful to decrease the fatal accidents.

Farmers should also be taught the methods of dealing with their cattle and quad bikes and they should be extra cautious while handling them.
