Verizon confirms the existence of Motorola ‘Droid X’

Verizon Wireless Thursday confirmed that Motorola will be launching a new Android-based handset, the ‘Droid X’; with the carrier’s website showing the image of the device, accompanied by the caption: “The Next Generation of Does: Droid Does.”

Presenting a series of mouse-over animations, Verizon’s Flash-based web promo for the Droid X revealed that the handset features a 4.3-inch screen, HDMI output; and boasts the capability of capturing 720-pixel video.

The web promo by Verizon comes a few days ahead of a reported Verizon media event scheduled for Wednesday, June 23 – that is, one day before the release of the much-hyped and much-leaked Apple iPhone 4. The ‘invitation only’ event, titled “Unleashing the Next Generation of Droid,” will witness speeches by Verizon, Motorola, Abode, and Google executives.

Though there has been hardly any other official disclosure about Motorola’s forthcoming Droid, pictures and rumored specifications of the device have been making rounds on the blogosphere for quite some time.

The handset was earlier referred to as the ‘Droid Xtreme’ and ‘Droid Shadow’; and the rumor mills were abuzz about its 1GHz processor, along with either 8GB or 16GB of built-in memory and an 8-megapixel camera. Rumors also have it that the Droid X will run Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’; and will feature a modified version of Motorola’s Motoblur Android interface.
