According to a recent report, two sex workers were given the benefits of unemployment. These two workers did not have earnings after the completion of a six month employment scheme on May 21.
The transgender group of people, who were earlier sex-workers, had a meeting with Losa McAlpine, Work and Income Auckland Regional Director. Yesterday, the meeting was held at the Mangere East Family Service Centre and it was agreed that the Director will station a staff member to the center. The duration of his posting will be half a day per week from the next week onwards.
The two workers are Isles Posimani aged 24 and Briannah Swift aged 18.They revealed to the Herald that they were not able to get employment, as well as, benefits after their six month scheme was over. These jobs were provided to them under the Community Max scheme and were helpful in giving them fresh jobs outside the sex trade.
Ms. Posimani disclosed that she had her own reasons for not attending the meetings at Work and Income's Mangere Service Centre.
Mama Tere, a social activist disclosed that transgender people have reservations in attending the meetings at the centre. She further added that the girls have to face uncomfortable questions regarding their sexuality and therefore, they hesitate in visiting the centre.
