Kiwifruit seller Zespri has scored points with growers for its advice-giving approach to developing licenses to grow three newly launched fruit varieties. Zespri had been besieged from a corporate grower, which wants its regulated export domination ended.
The representative of most orchardists, New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers, shared that Zespri had done a good job of creating a fair system, which would promote wide participation and provide some price certainty.
Zespri was also commended by a new breakaway group for paying heed to grower and post-harvest operator views.
About three new commercial varieties will be grown by Zespri, with the help of annual revenue of more than $1 billion. Zespri is responsible for most kiwifruit exports.
Zespri shared that the on-orchard will be done on two red kiwifruits, which had been shortlisted for commercialization. Chief Executive, Lain Jager revealed that Gold kiwifruit was the world's best performing horticulture product. He shared that Gold orchards earned premiums of more than 100% over other varieties.
Zespri could be "rushing" the new varieties launch because of the Turners campaign, as per a concern in the grower sector, shared Independent group Chairman, Marcus Wilkins. A Zespri spokeswoman rejected the suggestion, emphasizing that the varieties concerned had been developed and tested for eight to ten years.
