Supercity boundary proposal draws public opposition

Auckland

Government's move to carve off Auckland's northern and southern Hinterland may undergo yet another official review amid stiff opposition by people across different quarters.

The Auckland Regional Council, on Friday, rolled out a petition drive with residents urging the Local Government Commission to review the proposed Auckland Council boundaries.

Government, under new boundaries proposal, intends to exclude the northern half of Rodney district from the super city transferring it to Kaipara District Council and the Far North Regional Council. Franklin district also comes under the proposal and it can be added with Waikato District Council and Environment Waikato.

The regional council has urged the government to avoid any alteration in boundaries which will leave 54 parks away from Auckland creating unrest among masses.

Chairman Mike Lee firmly said that he would go to any extent to stop this re-organization process involving "the alteration of a boundary or the transfer of a responsibility".
