Sports promoting friendship through relay all over the world

Queen-Betan-relayQueen’s Betan relay will reach India on Friday. It has already covered 70 countries, 1, 70,000 km and 240 days and will enter India from Pakistan through the Wagah-Attari border on June 25 at 9.25 am. Queen’s baton relay was organized for the XIX Commonwealth Games and carries a theme of promoting friendship through sports.

The baton will receive a grand ceremony once they reach India and after this baton’s national leg relay will be powered.

It is anticipated that in coming 100 days, baton will visit all the 28 states and seven UTs of India. About 5000 baton bearers have participated in this relay and are free to choose any mode of transport namely, land, sea, air to cross around 200 cities and thousands of villages.

OC Chairman Suresh Kalmadi said that Queen’s Baton relay is the longest ever relay in the history of Commonwealth Games.

Kalmadi will receive the baton from Pakistan Olympics Association president Syed Arif Hassan at the Indo-Pak border.

Kalmadi said that during the bidding process for commonwealth games, Canada was a strong competitor of India for hosting the event but Pakistan has given support to India to host this event, so he appreciates Pakistan’s gesture in a successful bid for the games.

Following the relay throughout the country, Baton will reach Delhi on September 30.

After reaching Capital, relay will continue for three more days in the capital and will be docked at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the opening ceremony.

Kalmadi also said that brand ambassador for the event commencing from October3 – 14 will be a young sports icon and not a Bollywood celebrity.
