The lawyer of Jerome Kerviel has maintained that his client was used like a pawn by the flawed financial system that encouraged him to take risks. This was the statement of Olivier Metzner on the last day of the trial of former Societe Generale trader.
He also argued that Jerome was an innocent victim of the corrupt system of the bank that took blind risks and the whole financial system should be blamed for the fiasco.
The lawyer seriously questioned the role played by Societe Generale in the whole affair and he stressed that the bank created him and he was used by the bank as a pawn. He tried to emphasize that the bank, rather than Jerome, was the real criminal.
His defense team wants Jerome to be acquitted of charges for which he is accused of. On the other hand, Societe Generale accuses that the actions of Jerome Kerviel lead to the bank suffering a loss of 4.9 billion euro ($6.6 billion) that almost threatened the existence of the bank.
Jerome is pleading guilty to another charge of computer abuse. The prosecution wants a five year sentence for Jerome.
The judge, who is presiding in the case, Dominique Pauthe revealed that the verdict in the case will be delivered on October 5. Besides prison sentence, Jerome will also need to pay a 375,000 euro fine, if he is found guilty.
