Consumers Cautioned Ahead Of ETS Price Hikes

Sue-ChetwinThe battle against climate change will commence from tomorrow and the consumers are being advised to be more watchful.

Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand, Sue Chetwin, revealed that the dealers may try to benefit from the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and may use it as a justification for price rise.

Chetwin revealed to TVNZ News at 8 that if the consumers see a considerable hike, then they can leave the shop and choose some other shop for a more economical price. However, she is of the view that additional cost of fuel and electricity will be related to "just about everything".

The Commerce Commission is also cautioning the people against gouging of costs. Therefore, it is asking the enterprises not to deceive the consumers by holding ETS responsible for the price rise.

Spokesman Greg Allan asks the businesses to consider the risk to their reputation before taking any step in this direction.

Chetwin advises customers to shop around and put questions to the retailers so that it is ensured that the retailer is not overcharging them. She also says that she is expecting a number of complaints from the consumers.

The Government is expecting that the Emissions Trading Scheme will cost $165 per year to an average family.
