In a Friday statement, Toyota Motor Corp said that it intends announcing an international recall of almost 270,000 vehicles, including its Lexus luxury sedans in Japan, because of an issue with the valve component, which is defective and can cause the engine to stall.
Revealing that as many as 90,000 Lexus and Crown sedans will be recalled in Japan, Paul Nolasco, a spokesman for the automaker in Tokyo, added that the auto giant is also "making preparations to take similar, appropriate actions" for 180,000 more cars worldwide - as these cars carry the engine with the defective valve component.
Elaborating that the defective part in the vehicles to be recalled can cause unstable idling and stalling of the engine, Nolasco said that the company has yet to statistically confirm how many of the 180,000 internationally recalled vehicles were sold in the US alone.
Meanwhile, in a Thursday statement, the Lexus brand confirmed that nearly 137,000 of its vehicles in the US probably have V-6 or V-8 engines with the defective valve springs and, "in extremely rare instances, the engine may stop while the vehicle is in operation." The problem, as per the company, probably results because of "slight variations during the manufacturing process."
Further disclosing that eight models were affected by the problem, Lexus added that these models included the Lexus GS 350, GS 450h, GS 460, IS 350, LS 600h, LS 460, and LS 600hL, and the Toyota Crown.
