The excitement level will rise in the children, if their school time gets delayed by half an hour. It has some advantages as concluded by some studies.
According to a new study, the delay in school timing led to a significant improvement in students' mood, alertness, and motivation. It also increases their average sleep time during the week.
Judith A. Owens, MD, MPH, at the Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, R. I. and his colleagues studied 201 students from standard 9 to 12 of Rhode Island high school, where the class start time was changed from 8 a. m. to 8:30 a. m. for a two-month period. Then online surveys of Students, before the change in class time and afterwards, were taken.
The results were published in the July issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
The research found that students getting less than seven hours of sleep per night fell by 79.4% and those getting at least eight hours of sleep per night increased from 16.4% to 54.7%. The figure of students feeling displeasure or depression, decreased from 65.8% to 45.1% and those, who reported feeling annoyed or irritated throughout the day also dropped, from 84% to 62.6%. The sleep duration of students increased to 45 minutes.
Debates are rising regarding the starting time of schools. Experts are of the opinion that the delay will lead the children to go to their beds late, resulting in little sleep.
Some of the schools are following this change and have delayed their timings, while some schools are still following their previous schedules.
