According to the most recent statistics forwarded by market research firm comScore, the Google Android platform was the only platform to have shown market share growth during the three month period ending in May.
Going by the comScore data, Android notched up four percentage points, to reach up to 13.0 percent of market share, during the three months. While the latest growth figures for the Android are lower than the December-February period growth of an impressive 5.2 percent, it still is a clear indication of the fact that the Google mobile operating system is showing rapid growth.
The comScore data also revealed that despite the fact that both Research in Motion (RIM) and Apple are still the most dominant players, each of the two lost market share during mentioned three-month period.
The market share of RIM came down half a percentage point from the February figures, bringing the platform marginally down to the still-market-leading 41.7 percent; while the second-ranking Apple iOS dropped one percentage point, to 24.4 percent, during the period. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile ranked third with 13.2 percent share after having dropped two percent.
The stunning growth of Android clearly roots in the fact that the partners of the platform – chiefly HTC and Motorola - have been pretty consistent in bringing out newer Android handsets, which have been able to do fairly well in the increasingly competitive smartphone arena.
