Government Lacks Understanding of Obesity Issue: Labour

LabourLabour has criticized the argument of Peter Dunne, the Associate Health Minister, by saying that the minister has not understood the issue of obesity well. Mr. Peter, in his argument, had said that the Government emphasizes more on activity and nutrition to fight obesity.

Before this argument of minister, the spokeswoman for Fight the Obesity Epidemic had claimed that the Government has been ignoring the issue of obesity.

The spokeswoman, Dr. Robyn Toomath, addressed the press today. She said that Stomach-stapling surgery was the only treatment and it was not even publicly funded.

In his argument, Mr. Peter has also said that the Government currently was spending $70 million a year on physical activity programs and nutrition.

"The previous government focused on nutrition, but we are taking a more balanced approach with a greater role for physical activity and sports programs in curbing the obesity problem", he told the newspaper.

Ruth Dyson, a Labour MP, however, said that nutrition is a more important factor in fighting obesity in childhood. She also said that this importance has been revealed by several studies.

According to Ms. Dyson, the Government is not considering the deep impact of the issue and the Government is not making sufficient efforts to prevent the country from being named as the third fattest in the world.
