DigiTimes revealed in a Tuesday report that Apple is planning to launch second-generation iPads – which will have 5.6-inch and 7-inch screens, along with the currently-available 9.7-inch screen - by the end of the year.
The report said that the key focus of the forthcoming iPad models will on eBooks, rather than multimedia.
DigiTimes report said: “The sources noted that Apple has recently placed new iPad orders to Taiwan-based component makers for the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 with 9.7-inch, 5.6-inch and 7-inch models all included.”
The report, which also said that the 9.7-inch-screen model will only feature some minor changes, made no mention of whether the new models will feature a camera.
While there are rumors making rounds that the second-generation models of the iPad will feature OLED – organic LED – displays, boasting higher contrast than LED displays and superlative color saturation; DigiTimes has rebuffed the possibility.
As per DigiTimes, a senior analyst at Samsung – which happens to be one of the leading suppliers of OLED panels – has commented that the company essentially falls short of OLED supply even for its own products. As such, according to DigiTimes, it is highly unlikely that Apple will be able to switch to OLED panels in its forthcoming smaller iPads, which will probably be sold by the millions.
