New Zealand Registers Decline in Greenhouse Gas Emissions

New Zealand Registers Decline in Greenhouse Gas EmissionsAccording to a report prepared by New Zealand’s Ministry of Economic Development, greenhouse gas emissions by the energy sector declined by 7% during the last year.

The decline was not due to the Government’s policies, but due to an increased amount of rainfall that was experienced, last year.

The transport sector also reported decreased emissions and they feel that the 2% decline was mainly due to the prevailing economic crisis.

The report showed that the energy sector was responsible for 45% of the total emissions, while agriculture sector was the biggest contributor and was responsible for 47% of the total emissions in New Zealand.

The energy sector mainly comprises transport, electricity and manufacturing sectors and it was also brought under a new national carbon trading scheme from July 1.

New Zealand adopted this scheme to encourage industries to reduce their carbon emissions and it is the only country outside Europe to start such a scheme.

Environment experts feel that this move will lead to a lot of benefit for the environment and also encourage industries to adopt environment friendly steps.

The total greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand have increased by 22% since 1990 and the country wants to decrease its emissions to the 1990 levels by the end of 2012.
