Even after an opposition from the Queenstown Community, the deal between Queenstown Airport and the Auckland International Airport has been made.

In the secret deal, Auckland International Airport has bought a 24.5% stake in Queenstown Airport. The deal is worth $27.7 million.

Alistair Porter, the Head of Chamber of Commerce has also showed his anger on the secret deal, which was finalized ten days ago. He said that community consultation was necessary for such a deal, also, a proper business deal through the tender procedure.

Porter has also said that they have demanded for explanations from the Queenstown Lakes District Council related to this deal. They have asked if both the Airports had broken the responsibilities, while going for this deal.

On the other hand, present Mayor of Queenstown has supported the deal and said that the deal was required for the airport, as it needed money.

"It provides this airport with a very strong strategic alliance to enable the traffic through the airport to grow in the future”, he said.

Jetstar CEO, Bruce Buchanan also expressed his unhappiness at the deal. He said that the deal is kind of unusual and it is not sure that Auckland would be able to give more business to Queenstown.
