With Microsoft having recently revealed its intentions of discontinuing its Kin handsets, Verizon has delivered the final blow in the episode by opting to return all the unsold Kin smartphones – Kin One and Kin Two - to Microsoft as of Monday.
Reporting the latest move by Verizon, Electronista said that the carrier has already suspended the online sales of the Kin handsets; and is currently offering only accessories for the two devices.
Only a few days back, Verizon had slashed the cost of the Kin smartphones, apparently to clear the stock of the two handsets. While the cost of the $50-priced Kin One was brought down to $30; the cost of the Kin Two was reduced from $100 to $50.
In fact, it was already been widely speculated and reported that a Microsoft-Verizon disentanglement was on the cards – more so as Microsoft’s Kin team had been disbanded, thereby implying lack of future updates for the devices and other necessary support.
The Verizon decision to return the Kins to Microsoft comes over two weeks after the June 30 discontinuation statement in which Microsoft said: “We have made the decision to focus on our Windows Phone 7 launch and we will not ship Kin in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, we are integrating our Kin team with the Windows Phone 7 team. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U. S. to sell current Kin phones.”
