Motorola May Sell off its Wireless Network to Nokia Siemens

Motorola May Sell off its Wireless Network to Nokia SiemensMotorola Inc. has planned to sell its wireless-network equipment business to Nokia Siemens Networks. The deal would be realized on a sum of $1.3 billion approximately, as per some sources. The announcement regarding the deal was expected to be made today.

But, Motorola is not disclosing any of the details of the deal. A Spokesman, Jennifer Erickson denied saying anything on the price of the deal.

Nokia Siemens Networks is a joint venture between Finland's Nokia Oyj and Munich-based Siemens AG. The Company wants to tighten its status in North America to give tough competition to its rivals, such as Ericsson AB and China's Huawei Technologies Co. The competition from its rivals had earlier made Nokia Siemens to reduce its operating cost by chopping down jobs and closing some of its premises.

In November, Rajeev Suri, Chief Executive Officer of Nokia Siemens stated that the Company would boost up its business by indulging into acquisitions and partnerships and by cutting off some of the unnecessary expenses.

The discussions between Motorola and Nokia Siemens are going on. Nokia Siemens is being represented by Barclays Capital, while Motorola has taken the help of Centerview Partners, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., as told by the people familiar with the matter.

As a part of the deal, Motorola's wireless products such as mobile-phone and set-top box operations would be handed over to Nokia Siemens. The wireless networks business of Motorola dropped by 7% in the last quarter.
