Going by an inadvertent information leak by Verizon Wireless, the carrier will most likely phase out the original, last-November-launched handset, Motorola Droid, as well as the economical Devour – with both the phones apparently getting hardly any or very few more shipments, as the remaining stock is being sold out by Verizon.
Though there has been no official confirmation about the exact time line of the discontinuation of the original Droid, some information leak point to any time between the recent launch of the new Droid X and the forthcoming, August-end-scheduled Droid 2.
According to Droid forums, while there currently is no estimate as to when the entire stock of the original Droid and the Devour will sell out, it has been spotted that the listing of both the handsets is missing from Verizon’s leaked summer catalog.
Despite the fact that discontinuation of the original Droid may come before the end of even a year of the device’s debut, the handset has seemingly had a notable run and is considered one of the most significant Android-based handsets – a fact that is evident from the noteworthy sales of the handset, even in the face of competition from other more successful Android smartphones. Meanwhile, leaks of the forthcoming Motorola Droid 2 are makes rounds online, with Engadget reporting that the phone, priced 199$ on contract and $599 standalone, will an 8GB microSD card, will likely hit the markets August 23!
