In an attempt to boost the sales as well as profits in its Xbox console, Microsoft is, later this year, coming up with its $149.99-priced Kinect motion-sensing controller, which is scheduled for a November release.
In a Monday statement, the Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft revealed that it also intends introducing its Kinect motion-sensing system in a $299.99 package, which will include the new, slimmer version of its Xbox 360 console and the Kinect Adventures game. The console that is a part of the Kinect package will have 4GB of built-in memory and no hard drive.
Noting that Kinect has a lot of potential in terms of delivering a true “virtual; reality” experience; and thereby justifying the pricing of the motion-sensing controller, Xbox 360 spokesman David Dennis said: “We believe this is a price point that is going to resonate really well with consumers.”
According to the information forwarded by Dennis, the Microsoft Kinect also responds to voice commands, which is an added advantage in the crowded aisles. Dennis further added that Microsoft – the second-ranking gaming console maker after the Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo – also plans to offer limited in-store demonstrations of Kinect, to familiarize users with the motion controller.
Having already begun its countrywide promotion earlier this month to give consumers a preview of the Kinect, Microsoft is conducting promotional demonstrations at some selected Macy’s Inc. department stores.
