Dell acquiring storage-optimization technology firm, Ocarina Networks

Dell acquiring storage-optimization technology firm, Ocarina NetworksAnnouncing its newest acquisition move on Monday, Dell revealed that it is taking over Ocarina Networks – a San Jose, Calif ornia-based privately-held storage optimization technology company.

As per Dell, the acquisition of Ocarina – which essentially provides technology to compress images and other unstructured data so as to free up storage space - will give Dell a notably competitive push into the data management game by being a perfect foil for the deduplication capabilities in Dell’s storage systems.

The Dell storage systems – which already boast some enhanced storage offerings with EqualLogic - include its own products, along with the hardware built in partnership with long-time partner EMC.

Though Dell has stopped short of disclosing the financial terms of the Ocarina acquisition, the company has said that it expects the deal to materialize within the next two weeks.

Talking about the advantage that Ocarina will potentially bring for Dell, the Ocarina CEO Murli Thirumale, said in a recent statement:

“Combining Ocarina’s capability with Dell's leading storage portfolio, we plan to move the Ocarina solution well beyond what you've seen with other deduplication offerings to include 'end-to-end' optimization.”

Tirumale further added that the Dell-Ocarina association will bring “deduplication to not only primary storage, but also to key storage workflows including backup, replication, migration and tiering.”
