A Ghanaian "casanova" phony, has been investigated by Waihi police for befriending Kiwi women over the internet. The police have managed to discover that he had been using more pseudonyms.
As per detective Simon Everson of the Waihi CIB, a Ghanaian man had been pursuing Kiwi women on social networking sites.
He used to fabricate a sad story and enticed them with champagne as well as flowers. In return, these Kiwi women would act as mules and send on stolen goods. He used use their addresses to take delivery of goods purchased with stolen credit cards.
The women then forwarded the gifts to him in Africa. He used names like Paul Blart and Evans Annan. Mr. Everson further elaborated that the man persuaded women and trapped them in his sad story of not being able to get things sent to him in Ghana.
Mr. Everson said, "Using the name Paul Blart, the man uses stolen overseas credit card numbers to purchase various items from New Zealand companies' websites and gets them delivered to the women's addresses by courier".
Another woman brought it to the notice of police, a second Ghana-based scam, in which a man was using the names Larry Wilson and James Larry. Mr. Everson shared that it's the third case which being investigated by him in Waihi over the past five years.
