AOL’s launches new smartphone portal, Android apps, and Mobile Website

AOL’s launches new smartphone portal, Android apps, and Mobile WebsiteIn what apparently is a part of AOL’s renewed focus on mobile apps and content, under the headship of the new VP of mobile David Temkin, the company Thursday launched a new smartphone portal; the AOL Mobile Website; two Android-exclusive applications.

The move will apparently help AOL – which is endeavoring for a make over into an Internet content company - to offer more substantial competition to Google, Facebook and Twitter in the emerging mobile content arena, with an increasing number of Internet users looking to access the Web ‘on the go’ from smartphones equipped with full HTML Web browsers.

The new AOL smartphone portal - m. aol. com - supports HTML5 for rapid rendering of content for the users of the Apple iPhone and Android-based handsets. It also allows users to leverage location-based services for content, like local weather, traffic, and movies.

The other new product, the AOL Mobile Website essentially pulls content from AOL properties – including Engadget, AOL News, and The Unofficial Apple Weblog – and allows users of the iPhone, Android, and BalckBerry handsets to see the list of apps and properties supported by the company.

Lastly, of the two Android apps, AOL for Android helps users consume content from AOL’s properties as well as access AOL Mail and MapQuest; while the AOL DailyFinance app helps them to keep track of nearly 25 portfolios and receive real-time stock quotes and financial news.
