Commerce Commission has revealed that expected Australian Bank scammers are now operating in New Zealand, targeting the Kiwis.
Wellington's Commerce Commission Enforcement Manager, Greg Allan said, "There is a similar scam operating in Australia [and] it appears the details are so similar that it's probably the same group".
The scammers are telephonically inviting the credit card holders to pay additional fees for getting refund for the overcharges on their credit cards.
The Commission has revealed that it has received three complaints from the scam victims. The Commission further revealed that every case is slightly different, giving indications about the work of the same organization.
In each case, the victims are being informed about their eligibility for refund of $3,000 by paying fees of $100 to $300 via Western Union or the Post Office.
Mr. Alan told that the most effective way is by not providing the bank account details and not paying any fees. In case, a caller is already having the bank account details then, the account holder must call the bank immediately.
Scam victims are advised to contact the Commerce Commission on 0800 94 3600 or they can file their complaints on the website www.comcom.govt.nz, or they can send email contact@comcom.govt.nz.
The Commission is not investigating the scam but is coordinating the agencies by passing the relevant information.
