The Saturday session at the Comic-Con 2010 in San Diego witnessed the two leading fighting game publishers, Capcom and Namco Bandai, officially announcing a crossover of two of the best fighting games – Street Fighter and Tekken.
The crossover was announced by the ‘Street Fighter 4’ producer Yoshinori Ono; and the Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada. While Capcom will develop a Street Fighter Cross Tekken; Namco will come up with Tekken vs Street Fighter.
Capcom’s ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ – not the game’s official name though – will essentially make use of the art and gameplay style of the Street Fighter world; where as Namco’s Tekken X Street Fighter will chiefly focus on 3D battling which was part of the Tekken series.
At the Comic-Con, Capcom’s Super Street Fighter 4 panel showed a trailer of Street Fighter X Tekken, which will be released for two platforms - Xbox 360 and PS3.
The game with “fully realized 3D character models” will have Ryu and Chun Li as the first two fighters representing the Street Fighter side, while Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will embark on their first-ever 2D appearance.
Noting that Capcom and Namco are making history, Yoshinori Ono said: “Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn't just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I'm going to give it my all.”
