The increasing number of HPV throat cancer cases has forced the researchers to think whether the HPV vaccines, which are given for cervical cancer among women, can be effective to prevent the throat infections in men.
Gardasil from Merck and Cervarix from GlaxoSmithKline are two medicines, which are prescribed to cervical cancer patients. Recently, Gardasil was permitted to be used as a medicine to cure genital warts among men.
Damages caused by human papilloma virus are not harmful, but the constant infections are the main reason behind almost 70% of the 12,000 cervical cancer detections. Experts say that sexually transmitted viruses are the main reason to cause penile and anal cancer.
The cases of HPV throat cancer connection have come in light in last few years. According to the researchers, HPV throat cancer is transmitted because of oral sex. Every year, there are approximately 11,300 HPV cancers in the U. S. The number could reach at 20,000 by 2015.
Marshall Posner, who is Medical Director at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York has supported the opinion of experts and said that there is nothing negative about the vaccination and he himself would prefer his children to be vaccinated to stop the throat cancer.
