Gisborne District Council Supports ‘Grow Gisborne’

Nedine Thatcher SwannProposal of Gisborne's Chamber of Commerce to form Grow Gisborne is receiving huge support from Gisborne District Council. The chamber has offered an Economic Development Agency after this.

Nedine Thatcher-Swann, the Community Planning and Development Manager has prepared a report about this project. She said that all the Councilors should present their views about the plan in a meeting to be held on Thursday.

"This initiative will be a major step-up in the level of activity and investment in economic development in the district and is not simply a matter of transferring functions", she said.

According to Fraser Brown, Gisborne Chamber's President this project would be very encouraging for the development of the economy in the region. This will also aim to make all the regional organizations work together. It will also increase the employment opportunities.

In the recent reports, it has been presented that the region requires better jobs money wise. It is also shown that between 1986 and 2006, almost 2919 full time jobs were lost. In the same time period, part time or seasonal jobs increased by the number of 757.

At present also, there are only 5% people in the district, who are drawing a salary more than $50,000, which is not a good indicator for the economic development of the region.
