Angus Houston takes leave for prostate surgery

Angus-HoustonDefence Force chief Angus Houston is taking leave for an unspecified time while he undergoes prostate surgery.

Air Chief Marshal, Houston stated that his deputy Lieutenant-General David Hurley would take over while he is on leave.

The defence chief said that it is important for his health to follow a medical procedure in the coming weeks because he will undergo prostate surgery. The chief will not be available for further public comments until he returns to work.

Air Chief Marshal Houston, 63, has led defence since July 2005, overseeing Australia's highest rate of military activity since Vietnam.

Last year, Army chief Lieutenant-General Ken Gillespie revealed his own battle against prostate cancer. In May 2009, he underwent surgery for the removal of the prostate with subsequent tests showing he is 98% clear. In supporting an army drive for improved awareness about the disease, General Gillespie said prostate cancer had claimed more soldiers' lives than combat action in Afghanistan.

The Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Lieutenant General David Hurley, will act in the top job from Wednesday.
