Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee has initiated a regulation, according to which electricity users will be allowed to change their supplier more swiftly. The rule will be applicable from October. The power Companies will have to change customers within ten working days and half of all changes must take place within five working days. The relaxation to the power Companies for switching to new customers has been given as 23 working days.
With the arrival of this rule, the customers will be able to save their money by switching to the cheapest provider. There could be a saving of $100 per year and a comprehensive saving of $150 million across all customers.
But the practice of such a rule is not an easy task, as told by the Labour’s Energy Spokesperson Nanaia Mahuta.
Mahuta argued that coming up with such a scheme could be the National’s only way to help out consumers from the rising prices of power. Even last year, the Kiwis had to face impenetrability from the power Companies. He further added that such a plan could benefit the consumers for a shorter period, but the long-term efforts to restrain rising power prices are still to be determined.
Nanaia Mahuta said, “If the Electricity Industry Bill is the long-term solution for consumers then they should be worried. The bill removes statutory obligations from the Electricity Authority to provide fair and secure supply to consumers”.
