Fonterra Demands Safety Assurance from Indian Government

FonterraProtest over the New Zealand dairy products has raised the apprehensions of Fonterra. The Company is now looking for an assurance from the Government of India that the sale of its dairy products in future will be secure.

According to Trade Minister, Tim Groser, after seeing the poor rains in India, the dairy prices were hiked, and it made Government to order dairy products from New Zealand.

Earlier, a milk tank of Fonterra was dumped in Pune. He said that Fonterra already knew about the ongoing protest over these imported dairy products.

The Company issued an emailed statement about the situation in India.

"At the request of the Indian government Fonterra entered into commercial negotiations with the National Dairy Development Board”, a statement issued by Fonterra said.

National Dairy Development Board had imported 30,000 tons of milk powder and 15,000 tons of ghee from Fonterra. Fonterra sold its products in India, as per the current international prices.

The imported amounts of these dairy products constitute only 0.5% of demand in the country.

The Fonterra statement further said that the sale of all the products was observed totally on the basis of commercial guidelines. The prices were offered as per the international margins.
