Now parents of disabled children have more choice when it comes to sending their kids to school. It has been stated that under a Coalition plan for a $20,000 education card that follows each student, parents would be helped to make the choice to send disabled children to private schools.
The opposition education spokesman, Christopher Pyne, said, “The education card ends the discrimination that has been in place for families who choose private schools.”
A spokesman for the Association of Independent Schools of NSW said, “The association believed the Coalition policy would address many funding issues for disabled students in independent schools.”
The spokesman added that due to the students being fully funded, a private school with a blind student in NSW receives about $15,000 in government subsidy, while a state school receives up to $80,000.
About 6000 kids would end up receiving the card due to the $314 million commitment over four years.
Pyne added, ''Once we start paying back Labor's debt and deficit, we hope to extend the education card beyond severely disabled children to all children with a disability.”
