According to the Financial Times (FT)’ Wednesday report, Motorola and Verizon are teaming up for the production of a potential iPad challenger tablet device that will focus chiefly on television content.
Going by the information forwarded by FT’s unnamed sources, the highlight of the Motorola-Verizon tablet – which will feature a 10-inch screen and Google’s Android operating system – will be the capability to access Verizon’s FiOS digital pay television service.
The FT report further reveals that the tablet to be produced by Motorola and Verizon will be “thinner and lighter” than the Apple iPad, and will also allow tethering.
Boasting support for Abode Flash to enable users to view popular video sites, the tablet will have two cameras – a front-facing camera for video conferencing, and a back one for clicking pictures. It will also allow users to share its wireless connection with nearby devices.
The tablet, which is yet to be named and priced, will likely hit the US as early as this autumn.
While the astounding success of Apple’s game-changing iPad has enticed several other bigwig consumer electronics companies – including Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Cisco, and most recently, BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion – to foray into the emerging media tablet arena, the Motorola-Verizon tablet will apparently be a cut above the rest in terms of its ability to access pay TV service from a provider like Verizon.
