Meat from Cloned Animal Sold in UK

Cloned-AnimalThe Food Standards Agency is admitted that meat from a cloned animal has been consumed and it feels that the meat may have been sold in Scotland. The news comes after strong denials from the Food Standards Agency and the dairy industry that no product from any cloned animal has made it to the market.

As per the Food Standards Agency, food from any cloned animal or its offspring is illegal. It also started a controversy after the European Union officials pointed that many diary and meat products in the UK market may have been derived from clones.

The European Union pointed that there is no restriction on importing semen, which may have been derived from a cloned animal. It also feels that millions of animals may be the offspring of cloned animals.

The Department for Agriculture has also admitted that it does not examine if semen, which is imported into the UK, is from cloned animals.

Animal welfare activists feel that cloning process is not good and can also decrease the lifespan of the animals. But, there is still no proof that consuming a product from a cloned animal is dangerous for human health.

The controversy started after a farmer claimed in a newspaper that he had sold milk from the offspring of a cloned cow illegally.
