Clearwire, which has thus far been teaming with operators like Time Warner and Sprint for offering 4G hotspots compatible with its WiMax network, has now announced iSpot – the new 4G hotspot that works only with Apple’s iOS devices.
The new Clearwire iSpot essentially offers 4G WiMax connectivity for as many as eight WiFi-enabled Apple devices like the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. The hotspot that can be accessed for a no-contract, flat charge of $25 per month; and it does not have any usage cap.
Priced at $99.99, the iSpot device itself is far more economical that the $224.99-priced ‘Clear Spot 4G+’ which drops to 3G in case of unavailability of the iMax service.
Saying that the Clearwire iSpot will allow customers to run “all of their Apple mobile devices at true broadband speeds for a single, simple monthly fee,” Clearwire’s Senior VP of marketing, Thomas Enraght-Moony, said in a statement: “With the iSpot, Apple customers don’t have to sort through confusing service plans with overage fees, nor do they have to worry about how much data they’re using.”
However, for now, the Clear iSpot is limited only to the devices that run Apple’s iOS, which implies that though users can engage in several compelling activities, like streaming Netflix to their iPads, and using Skype on their iPhones; they will not be able to use the device with PCs, notebooks, or even Apple’s Mac computers.
