Amendments to the 2002 Legislation

Federated FarmersNew Zealand’s economic well-being is largely attributed to contribution made by the farmers and farming too, sadly has a major role in the funding of local councils.

The Federated Farmers have apprehended about the groundless inputs made by the farmers to the local councils. According to the sources, only 2.9% of the New Zealand farmers anticipate a recovery in the economic conditions.

A recommendation has been put forward to the Local Government and Environment Select Committee at Parliament concerning the Local Government Act Amendment Bill.

Don Nicolson, Federated Farmers President said that the Governments order under the 2002 legislation, was making their members pay hefty sums as much as $10,000 a year. And the disturbing fact is that the farmers did into have idea about the distribution of funds as in the amount being paid by them.

He said that they were happy about the fact that some necessary changes were being made in the 2002 legislation. These changes entailed some important things like addition of valuable reporting requirements.

“We’re also glad to see it will reduce the emphasis and status of the excessively broad, opaque and expensive community outcomes processes while enhancing the opportunity for private sector involvement in key infrastructure areas”, he said.

The bill though is being considered as an ideal step, but many say that the fundamental problem of the local Government would still continue to persist.
