Plans to reduce Sodium level

Plans to reduce Sodium levelCampbell soups and Nordica Cottage Cheese have revealed that they plan to cut down the levels of Sodium in their food articles. This step comes after a federal task force revealed its voluntary measures to reduce the intake of salt levels in Canadian diets.

Almost two years after its commencement, a report has been released by the federal Sodium Working Group which encourages research, education and voluntary reduction in processed foods to effectively reduce Sodium consumption to 2,300 mg a day from the previous level of 3,400 mg.

The recommended quantity of Sodium intake in Canada at present is 1,500 mg or half a teaspoon per day. Packed foods and diets amount to as much as 80 percent of the total Sodium intake which is an inexpensive flavor enhancer and preservative.

The report by the working group was appreciated as a “model approach” by the Food and Consumer Products of Canada. The members of this organization are the makers of of majority of the processed food products that are sold in Canada.
