The end of this weekend will take the battle against women’s cancers in Alberta ahead by roughly 58 million steps. End Women’s Cancers organized a 60-kilometers walk which was evenly divided over two days and was undertaken by 741 participants.
In other words it means a distance of 44,460 kilometers which is about 1,320 steps for each participant and a fund raising of $1.6 million.
Linda Mickelson, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, said soon after she reached the finish line, “This is huge for us, this event has really become a transformational one. This is the largest cancer fundraiser in Alberta’s history. In just five years of this walk, we’ve been able to invest more than $22 million in Alberta research and programs.”
In the last five years they have managed to set up two mobile mammography stations aimed at healthy Albertans who may not want to travel all the way to a major centre for a pre-emptive checkup.
The funds from Calgary and Edmonton events have also gone to 60 research programs and it also supports a research chair in both breast and ovarian cancer.
