Giving coffee lovers a reason to smile and grab another cup of their favorite coffee, a recent research carried out in the US has reported that consumption of several cups of coffee in a day can help in halting progression of liver diseases.
The study reported that patients suffering from chronic Hepatitis C and other similar advanced liver diseases and drank 3 or more cups of coffee a day brought down the chances of their disease progressing by 53%.
The study was conducted on 766 participants, who enrolled in the Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-Term Treatment against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) Trial. All the subjects had Hepatitis C and had stopped responding to treatments via anti-viral medication. The patients were observed for 3.8 years in all and liver biopsies were taken every 1.5 and 3.5 years to prove that thanks to coffee, liver disease progression had stopped.
"We observed an inverse association between coffee intake and liver disease progression", the authors reported. The presence of caffeine has come under the spotlight and is believed to be the agent which halted progress of the disease.
According to a WHO report, around 3-4 million people across the globe contract Hepatitis C every year. In this scenario, coffee can be looked at as a good medicine.
