Whitireia Polytechnic under Police Inquiry for Misusing Students’ Fund

Whitireia-PolytechnicWhitireia Polytechnic, based in Wellington has been alleged over embezzlement of the students’ funds of more than $750,000, parked with it by the Students’ Association.

The police inquiry is being carried out against the Whitireia Polytechnic, which misused the finances of the students and pretended not to know, where the money was spent.

As found by the undisclosed audit, last year about $12,000 were received by Loretta Ryder, the former President of the Student’s Association. Around $18,000 were used to provide lodging to the Ryder and her family, while more than $17,000 was employed on establishing mobile broadband use by Association's Executive. Thus, the Whitireia duped student’s faith.

David Do said, “That behavior, that spending, is appalling and it is completely unacceptable and we condemn it”.

As the police investigations are going on, so it’s not suitable to give any remarks regarding the case, but  there is a legislation that shields the student’s payments to the associations, expressed Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce.

Also, till the audits get examined, no comments will be made by the Don Campbell, Whitireia's Chief Executive, as stated by the 3 News.

The misappropriation was also alleged by the Labor leader Phil Goff, who expressed that exploiting students’ money, will leave an adverse affect on their learning and services for their education.
