Of what may have come as a sigh of relief to the pharmaceuticals companies, the Federal Regulator has allowed for the new form of emergency contraceptive pills to be used by the common people.
As per the new form, the pills can be taken within five days of unprotected intercourse. Also known as the Morning After' Pill, it is going to be called ella. But, the drugs will be given only on the presentation of a prescription.
It is said that the new pills are going to be better and more effective. Also they are being made keeping women between 17 years and more in mind.
Data has shown that women who go for unprotected sex have a probability in 1 out of 20 to become pregnant. But the ones that use ella reduce that risk to one out of 40. But the pills are less effective on women who are obese.
While the decision has been greeted well by the supporters of abortion, the anti-abortion groups are totally against this. The pills have been an issue of debate ever since they were made.
Women have started using it on a regular basis and are not using it as an emergency option.
